Senior human resources professional reports directly to the Chief Talent Officer and provides talent management and leadership in our Calgary office. Working closely with the Managing Partner and their leadership teams, the Director of Talent, Calgary is a senior leader in the Talent structure, and is accountable for developing talent strategies to achieve best in class employee and partner engagement in Dentons’ Calgary office.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Provides strategic talent-related advice to firm management and leaders in Calgary.
  • Coordinates with Canada region business services teams and Talent centres of excellence (COEs) (including Business Services, Learning, Recruitment, Professional Development, Total Rewards and Talent Services) to share best practices and deliver excellent talent services to firm members in the Calgary office.
  • Identifies priorities and prepares comprehensive talent-related plans to support business objectives and improve employee and partner engagement.
  • Coaches partners, department leaders and leadership teams to improve their effectiveness in the areas of talent management and employee engagement.
  • Effectively manages direct reports.
  • Analyzes talent trends within the Calgary and Alberta legal marketplace.
  • Proactively identifies current and future talent needs in the Calgary office
  • Supports office managing partner in the successful recruitment of partners and senior associates.
  • Prepares and implements action plans arising from the firm’s engagement survey.
  • Oversees talent processes within the office, including performance, promotion, compensation, and bonus decisions.
  • Assists firm leaders in identifying and developing star talent and creates development plans to address their professional and career objectives.
  • Coaches and supports department leaders to identify underperformers and prepare development plans to achieve the required performance levels.
  • Implements talent transformational projects that support the firm’s business goals and strategies (such as succession planning, career pathways and talent development).
  • Promotes best in class diversity and inclusion outcomes through personal leadership, professional development and talent management processes.
  • Supports the Canada Region Partnership Application and Review Process in Calgary.
  • Implements and manages effective onboarding and off boarding processes in Calgary.
  • Prepares, submits and manages the Talent budget for Calgary.
  • Leverages resources to achieve talent goals to maximize efficiency, minimize cost and achieve desired outcomes to the fullest.


  • 10 years of work experience with focus on human resources or talent development and a minimum of five years in a management role. Previous working experience in a law firm is a strong asset.
  • University degree and HR or coaching designation preferred; law degree an asset.
  • Ability to develop relationships and work effectively at all levels in a highly complex, matrix partnership environment.
  • Exceptional collaboration, leadership and business consulting skills.
  • An innovative and creative approach to solving problems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all functions of human resources including talent development, performance management, policy development, succession planning, compensation, and recruitment.
  • Working knowledge of business operations.
  • Superb planning and an ability to execute complex initiatives.
  • Action oriented with a strong desire to achieve results.
  • High attention to detail.
