The Legal Assistant within our Insolvency Department will provide general litigation and administrative support in our Insolvency Department. The position will suit an individual early in their career and requires a confident, reliable and business-minded assistant with the ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.


The successful candidate will be organized, discreet, detail-oriented, and have a client-first approach to work. In addition, the successful applicant must be team-oriented and accustomed to collaborating as a team with other assistants.  Generally, the hours of work are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and subject to flexibility to meet client needs; pre-authorized overtime may be required.


What you’ll be doing

  • Preparing and proofreading legal documents, correspondence, accounts, pleadings, various litigation documents and court forms and arranging for filing and service meeting tight timelines.
  • Preparing and maintaining a bring-forward system, diarizing court dates and meetings.
  • Maintaining lawyer’s dockets on a timely basis.
  • Processing incoming and outgoing mail, including maintenance of email accounts.
  • Maintain physical and electronic filing system.
  • Preparing and updating forms such as cheque requisitions and expense reports.
  • General administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and meetings, photocopying materials, booking meeting rooms, making travel arrangements, etc.; working with other related departments/services internally to meet client needs.
  • Demonstrating a team approach; supporting and standing in for colleagues to cover absences;
  • Ensuring strict adherence to confidentiality; accountability to both internal and external clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What qualifications you need

  • Post-secondary education or Legal Assistant diploma preferred.
  • Work experience in a legal environment with working knowledge of litigation processes and procedures with preferred experience in bankruptcy, insolvency and intellectual property.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities, remain calm yet keep a sense of urgency and a positive team driven work ethic.
  • Strong technical skills with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and legal applications such as Elite and iManage.
  • High level of organizational/follow up skills; attention to detail, proof reading and accuracy are required.
  • Demonstrated professionalism with colleagues and clients both in person and by phone.
