The BI Reporting team deliver highly tailored and fit for purpose business intelligence solutions for use across the firm.

The roadmap is exciting with our firmwide finance transformation due to overhaul and modernise our BI technology stack and architecture. The team has a wealth of experience and we encourage a culture of support and knowledge sharing.
 
The Role

 

We are seeking a talented Power BI developer to join our Business Intelligence team. The ideal candidate will possess both strong data visualisation skills to delight our customers combined with technical expertise in SQL, Power BI and Microsoft Azure with a strong background in report development, data modelling and data warehousing.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Design, develop, test and deliver Power BI reports and dashboards that provide insightful and actionable business intelligence in line with agreed architecture and design standards.
  • Provide recommendations on existing report solution usage and suggest opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross functional stakeholders to understand business needs and translate business requirements into technical specifications offering data driven solutions.
  • Build and maintain Azure data platform including Azure data pipelines.
  • Connect to various data sources, import, and transform data for business intelligence.
  • Develop calculated measures and columns with DAX in Power BI Desktop.
  • Understand and maintain security model including row-level security.
  • Troubleshoot data issues, validate result sets, recommend and implement process improvements.
  • Design, develop and implement ETL and DAX processes.
  • Optimise BI dashboards with a focus on usability, performance, flexibility, scalability and standardisation.
  • Produce consistent technical documentation for accessibility and understanding.
  • Optimise table design, data models and semantic models for onward consumption by content creators across the firm.
  • Observe configuration management and change control methods.
  • Offer technical support and training for other team members and end-users.
  • Ensure the appropriate configuration, backup and restoration of BI tools and systems.
  • Continuous learning mindset to remain current on new BI technologies, capabilities and best practices.

 

Required experience, skills and attributes

 

Essential technical skills

 

  • SQL (Microsoft T-SQL) - highly experienced in data retrieval and manipulation from various sources.
  • Power BI - strong experience:
    • Report development, data visualisation, data flow, models, marts, sets;
    • Understanding Power BI Service for sharing, collaborating, and publishing reports and dashboards. Knowledge of setting up and managing workspaces, gateways, and data refresh schedules.
  • ETL framework (Extract, Transform, Load) - experience with data extraction, transformation and loading processes, including data integration and cleaning techniques, troubleshooting issues.
  • Data Source Connectivity - ability to connect Power BI to various data sources, including databases, Excel files, cloud-based sources, and web services.
  • Data modelling - ability to design and implement effective data models using relationships, calculated columns, measures, and hierarchies. Understanding of star schema and other data modelling techniques.
  • DAX (Data Analysis Expression) - proficient in writing DAX for creating custom calculations and measures. Understanding DAX functions and their applications in Power BI.
  • Power Query.
  • Azure Environment:
    • Azure Data Studio;
    • Azure Data Factory - linked services, datasets, scheduling, triggering;
    • Azure DevOps - integrated deployments, continuous integration, continuous deployment, pipelines, repository;
    • Azure Platform/Database - workspace, gateway administration, resource allocation, AAD permissions, role-based access control (RBAC).
  • Data warehousing - architecture, model design.
  • Data governance and security - knowledge of data governance principles and best practices. Understanding Power BI features including role-level and row-level security.

 

Desirable technical skills

 

  • Microsoft Fabric.
  • Elite 3E - database structure, reports and metrics, integrated development environment (IDE).
  • Azure Logic Apps.
  • Azure ETL (Datalakes, Databricks).
  • Microsoft BI stack, including - Power Pivot, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS:
    • Knowledge multi-dimensional cubes (SSAS, SSIS) with MDX scripting.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to collect, organise, analyse and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex information to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team in fast paced, dynamic environment requiring good judgment, flexibility and a hands-on approach
  • Planning and organisational skills, including the ability to manage several workstreams simultaneously, balancing business priorities and quality
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, optimize, and integrate BI solutions of a complex nature across an organisation
  • Strong personal motivation, drive and initiative; willingness to take complete ownership over projects and tasks
  • Project experience including requirements gathering, design, stakeholder engagement, technical testing, analysis, development, implementation, documentation, workshop delivery and maintenance
  • Willingness to learn and adapt with a positive attitude to challenges and opportunities
  • Ability to build and develop strong relations with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Awareness of business processes associated with legal or financial service firms
