We are looking for an able and enthusiastic Associate to join our Regulatory & Investigations team in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Our team works with clients across the retail and wholesale financial services sector, advising a broad range of clients including all types of banks, FinTech companies, payment institutions, credit and mortgage firms, MIFID investment firms, fiat and crypto trading venues, energy trading companies and insurers. We advise on all aspects of regulation including regulatory perimeter advice, prudential requirements, governance, outsourcing, funding and liquidity, conduct of business requirements and client money.

The Role

 

This is an exciting and challenging role and an excellent opportunity for a 2+ year PQE Associate. You will be passionate about progressing your career within a global firm and in supporting the ongoing growth of the practice. 

 

You will advise clients on large projects such as M&A of regulated businesses, regulatory change and cross border expansion working with our lawyers in the UK, Europe, US, Canada and Australia. You will be able to develop your expertise over a broad range of consumer, payments and wholesale financial services and will work on a range of engagements, including advising on authorisation and structuring of regulated businesses, regulatory compliance, regulatory change, launch of new products, and multi-jurisdictional projects. 

 

You will support clients throughout the full financial regulatory process, including obtaining licenses, developing compliance and risk management systems, drafting product materials, and get involved in transactions, business reviews and regulatory applications. 

 

Drawing upon the industry knowledge and strength of our transactional and regulatory practices in all major financial centres around the globe, you will gain unparalleled experience and play a fundamental role in building the practice within the UK.

Required Experience, Skills, and Attributes

 

Responsibilities

  • Advise on financial services regulatory and financial crime issues.
  • Build and maintain client relationships.
  • Make significant contributions to business development.
  • Work closely with the Banking, Financial Markets Litigation and Financial Services Contentious Regulatory teams where appropriate.
  • Provide thought leadership and raise the profile of the firm externally.

 

Technical Skills 

  • English or Scots law legal knowledge gained within a top-tier firm. 
  • Strong academic record.
  • Knowledge of the overall regulatory landscape in the UK and a good understanding of the upcoming regulatory reform in the UK.
  • Knowledge of the UK regulatory perimeter, including issues relating to, the RAO, EMRs and PSRs. 
  • Knowledge or experience providing regulatory transaction support to both M&A and corporate reorganisation. 
  • Knowledge or experience of supporting firms with FCA/PRA licensing processes including authorisations, variation of permission, notifications, de-authorisation process, etc. 
  • A broad understanding of some of the major international regulatory initiatives impacting the financial services sector. Knowledge of MiFID II, EMIR, MAR, DORA and MiCAR while not essential is of particular interest.
  • A broad understanding of legal and regulatory requirements in relation to anti-money laundering/terrorist financing, the UK Bribery Act and the Proceeds of Crime Act is also of interest.
  • Exceptional drafting skills and legal research ability.
