POSITION SUMMARY

 

Dentons Canada (the “Firm”) is currently recruiting for a Director, Pricing and Legal Project Management to be resident in Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, Vancouver, Edmonton or Calgary.  Reporting directly to the Firm’s Chief Transformation Officer, the successful candidate will be a key member of the Firm’s National Operations team and responsible for developing and leading strategic pricing for the Firm, and for rapidly accelerating the growth and impact of the pricing function at the Firm.

 

The successful candidate will be able to work across all levels of the organization to develop and enhance a culture of pricing excellence and profitability optimization at both the strategic and tactical levels. The position will be client-facing, requiring an individual who is adept at negotiating win-win outcomes with an emphasis on delivering an outstanding client experience. 

 

Working closely with the Chief Transformation Officer, this role will be instrumental in shaping the Firm’s pricing strategy and approaches and building the resources, tools, data infrastructure, templates and team needed to elevate the firm’s competitiveness in a rapidly evolving legal market.  You will also ensure the function continues to scale, mature, and deliver sustained value across the Firm.  As the leader of this function, you will also build a high-performing team, fostering continuous growth and development.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Develop and execute innovative pricing strategies that align with the firm's business objectives and anticipate the evolving needs of our clients and the legal industry.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to partners, providing guidance and hands-on support to partners in pricing negotiations with clients.
  • Deliver ongoing training and coaching to partners and other stakeholders on pricing strategies, Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFAs) and Legal Project Management (LPM).
  • Monitor industry  market trends and ensure Dentons Canada remains competitive in a rapidly changing legal market.
  • Collaborate with members of the Firm’s Finance and National Operations teams to design, develop, implement and enhance data-driven pricing tools and resources to improve efficiency and accuracy in pricing decisions.
  • Coordinate with Dentons’ Global Pricing team and pricing leads in Dentons’ other regions on cross-border hourly rates or AFAs for clients or matters that involve cross-regional components.
  • Collect and leverage historical fee data to accurately price legal matters and to assist in developing and enhancing budget templates for common matter types that include standard scopes of work, assumptions, staffing models and budgeted hours.
  • Ensure disciplined monitoring of budgets or AFAs enabling proactive communication with clients, eliminating billing surprises and strengthening transparency and trust with clients.  
  • Build, develop and lead a high-performing pricing team, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and professional development
  • Partner with the Firm’s practice groups to understand their unique pricing pressures and develop opportunities that support growth, profitability and client satisfaction

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Degree in finance or a related business field, MBA and/or Juris Doctor preferred
  • 10+ years' experience in professional services pricing, negotiations and revenue management in a professional services firm, and preferably within a law firm
  • Superior communication and presentation skills are required, with client-facing experience and comprehensive understanding of professional services business model, financial management principles and profitability metrics
  • Adept at navigating complex, high-pressure environments
  • Strong commercial / business acumen, with ability to understand the larger context surrounding pricing approaches and translate those into a body of knowledge that helps shape the Firm's pricing strategy in Canada and globally
  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional services firm rate structures, discount arrangements and AFAs
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with strong organizational and time management skills as well as strong analytical, evaluative and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to clearly and concisely summarize complex quantitative concepts, both orally and in written communications to internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong track record of managing teams, both direct reports and within complex matrices
  • Proficiency in Power BI and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. 
  • Proficiency in financial modelling and spreadsheet functionality is required.  Must be able to manipulate data effectively and present findings to management and key stakeholders
  • Detail oriented, with ability to exercise sound judgment and possess the confidence and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with the Firm’s senior management, lawyers, professionals and business staff
  • Ability to build relationships and foster a collaborative environment with all stakeholders
  • Self-motivated person with a positive and professional attitude

The target salary range for this position is $160,000 – $180,000, commensurate with the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and qualifications. Dentons is committed to equitable and competitive compensation.
