POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Profile and Communications is a strategic leader responsible for shaping and executing the Firm’s comprehensive communications strategy to solidify Dentons’ brand as Canada’s Global Law Firm. This role oversees all aspects of internal and external messaging, brand reputation, media relations, issues management and stakeholder engagement, ensuring alignment with business objectives and organizational culture. The Director will serve as a trusted advisor to the Firm’s senior leadership, practice and sector group leaders, and other business services teams to develop and drive innovative campaigns, leading a high-performing team of communications professionals in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
The successful candidate is experienced and accomplished in managing communications, branding, social media, advertising and media relations strategies, bringing a deep understanding of the legal and business sectors.
This role reports to the Chief Clients & Markets Officer (CCMO).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic leadership
- Develop, lead and execute integrated communications strategies that advance the Firm’s brand, reputation and business priorities across all channels (internal, external, digital, social, media, advertising and executive communications)
- Conceptualize and develop comprehensive communications plans and marketing strategies to support large scale initiatives. Advise C-Suite executives and leadership teams on strategic messaging, change management and employee engagement initiatives
- Align communications and marketing efforts with organizational objectives, culture and values, ensuring consistency and impact across all platforms
- Prepare and deliver executive-level presentations and reports
- Oversee and develop key communications publications to support profile efforts of practice and sector groups
- Oversee the creation and delivery of executive-level communications, including speeches, presentations, talking points, press releases, media statements, brand and social media
Management and collaboration
- Lead, mentor and develop a high performing communications and marketing translations team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement
- Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leadership, practice/sector groups, business services, media and external partners
- Manage external agencies and vendors, ensuring alignment with brand standards and strategic priorities, as well as budget
- Work collaboratively with members of the broader team to develop marketing strategies for key initiatives
- Continually look for new ways to innovate delivery through emerging technologies and offerings
Brand and reputation
- Drive proactive and reactive media relations across Canada, cultivating strong relationships with legal and business journalists, overseeing press releases, pitches, key messages and media statements, and leading issues management in collaboration with the CCMO
- Enhance the thought leadership, content and social media strategy to elevate the Firm’s market profile
- Monitor and analyze market trends, industry developments and emerging risks to inform the communications strategy
- Lead issues management and crisis response, ensuring timely, transparent and effective communication
- Drive the Firm’s branding initiative, developing advertising strategies that support both national and local priorities
Internal communications and engagement
- Design and implement internal communications programs that foster employee engagement, transparency and a positive organizational culture
- Develop and manage internal channels (intranet, newsletters, social platforms) to ensure effective information flow and engagement
- Establish and track metrics to measure the impact and efficacy of communications initiatives
Project and change management
- Oversee complex, multifaceted projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with Firm goals
- Lead communications for major organizational initiatives, including change management, strategic launches and compliance programs
Quality and compliance
- Ensure all communications meet the highest standards of quality, accuracy and brand consistency
- Maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information
- Demonstrate commitment to privacy, ethical conduct and regulatory compliance
REQUIREMENTS
- Post-secondary degree in communications, public relations, marketing or related discipline
- 10+ years of experience in communications, with significant leadership experience working in professional services, legal or corporate environments
- Proven track record in developing and executing strategic communications plans at a senior level
- Project management experience
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
- Advanced digital media proficiency, including social media, content marketing, SEO, analytics and emerging technologies
- Strong crisis management, change management and issues management capabilities
- Superior organizational, project management and analytical skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver under pressure
- Demonstrated experience in team leadership, mentoring and talent development
- High emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills and ability to build trust and credibility
- Intellectually curious, creative, and results-driven
- Business-focused mindset with a strategic approach to decision-making
- Ability to navigate complex, matrixed organizations and drive cross-functional collaboration
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and communications platforms; design and visual storytelling skills are an asset
- Experience with media monitoring, analytics and project management tools
- Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset
